The Toes Family

The Toes Family is the long-standing rival of the List Family, with its own peculiar customs, grudges, and tangled history. If the Lists are known for sharp wordplay and calculated moves, the Toes are known for their stubbornness, secretive nature and a talent for surviving things that should have ended them.

The Toes Family is one half of Murkmire’s old rival Houses, based in Grindle-On–Murk, England. They share a family crest, a frog. Where the Lists lean toward tidy tradition, the Toes cultivate drama. Their wing of Murkmire Manor is all dark marble and echoing stone, designed as if preparing to host either a séance or a funeral, with statues and portraits that seem to judge more than decorate.

Palmet Toes, last of the Toes, was desperate to preserve his fading Family Name. He married one of the Bland sisters and settled into Murkmire Manor. Another Spiral-appointed lineage teetering on the edge of oblivion was the List family. Monopo List entered an arranged marriage to the other Bland sister, just as the Spiral had decreed for the final Toes. He, too, moved into Murkmire, joining his new wife, as well as his new sister-in-law and brother-in-law. There, the two men set about resurrecting their dwindling bloodlines.

At the root of the modern Toes line is Stilet Toes remembered in death for elegance that cut as sharply as her secrets and the long shadow she casts on inheritance and power games in the family. Her daughter Ve Toes, now stepping into the matriarchal role, is described as a blade in human form; disciplined, dangerous, precise, and treating even conversation like command. Ve brings a soldier’s resolve, legal expertise, and a fierce protectiveness over the Toes legacy, often seen as the one trying to keep the clan’s chaos directed.

Ve’s children carry the family’s more notorious reputation. Her twin daughters Toma and Pota Toes—known throughout the house as the Poison Twins—channel their Names into botanical mischief and weaponized gardening. Toma is the crimson, commanding twin who cultivates poisons and passions with ruthless precision, while Pota is the rooted, sly counterpart, trimming thorned vines into near-surgical forms and keeping a Mortis tin full of secrets. Around them orbit other Toes: Grot in the caves beneath the Manor, Gus in his fizzing Experimentorium , the collector twins Memen and Momen, and the deadly dancer Couran. But it is Ve and her daughters who most clearly embody what the Toes have become: a family of sharp edges, carefully curated danger, and Names that are never just names.
